Review

This app presents a classic recreation of the card game Cribbage. Users play against the computer, taking turns discarding cards to earn points. A simple tap control method is used throughout the game. The display shows the player’s full hand clearly, making it easy for the user to see and select which card they want to play. A useful feature of the game is the hint feature. This allows players to request a hint from the computer as to which card should be played if the user requires extra help.

Further customizable options include different backgrounds and card decks, allowing the user to modify the game to match their preferences and therefore improve accessibility. Three setting options allow for users to further customize the game experience. The default settings allow for animations to sum up the points and provide the reason for each point assigned after each round. Users have to option to skip these animations completely within the settings by adjusting the animation speed. For more experienced users, the settings menu contains an option to allow for manual score counting.

We recommend that users have prior knowledge of the game as the rules are quite complex to learn. Although there exists a simple tutorial option, the complex nature of the game is not recommended for novice users. There is currently no option to play against another human player (pass & play mode) and all games must be against the computer. The free version contains a small banner advert along the bottom of the screen during gameplay. Due to its small size, we do not consider it to be much of a distraction. Unfortunately, there is currently no option to purchase upgrades within the app to remove adverts.

Recommended settings

Settings can be found by tapping the downwards-facing arrow on the top right-hand corner of the game screen and then selecting Settings. The default settings are suitable for most users since the classic green background is simple and not distracting. Additionally, the card designs provide a good contrast and are easy to identify.
